Anyhow, a continuation of this cestarian.deviantart.com/art/I…

I just figured out this new way to work that favors form and volume above well... whatever else I could favor really, as can be seen I'm still having some issues, but for the first time it feels like I'm really, really painting and painting kinda freely.

This was my first session of actually testing it for a while, there are a few ways about this approach that I'm not sure how much I like, first off instead of sketching I make a silhouette (Like literally pick the hardest brush I've got and block in the shape) and then I transparency lock the layer so that I can't paint outside the silhouette while I'm lighting it up and shit. I don't like the reliance on transparency lock, but I honestly just don't know how else I'd do this without making a complete mess of the outermost edges. (I mean probably use an eraser afterwards, but like I said, that will make it look messy because I'm not smooth enough with it).

The transparency lock reliance also kinda makes it hard to correct the shape/silhouette after I start going into the features.

The other issues all just have to do with my lack of skill I guess, either way though I finally feel like I  can properly represent what's "in front" and what's "behind" by shading and lighting things in certain ways...

But yeah, can't say I'm properly shaping skulls yet from any angle, I know all the components but I have a particularly rough time with the jaw and the maxilla (to my great surprise though I'm not having much difficulty with the nose although I could improve on all accounts in drawing everything I'm already getting sorta kinda right) I clearly need a lot of practice but I think I'm rolling in a good direction now. If anyone is wondering why skulls, then it's a first step before I dive into portraits. (I know portraits would technically be easier to draw than skulls, especially if I roll with a relatively simplified anime or semi-realistic style; but I want to have a good base to build from, besides I don't particularly care about it when my skulls look terrible, but if I draw a terrible looking face I'll cry for days!)

Skulls have hard edges and soft edges, you should buy a skull model, or the book called skulls, has great animal skulls in there, is awesome, they have it in amazon. Reference can help you improve edges.
